When Does Piece Pricing Work For You?
IMS provides supervised crews to handle companies' variable production requirements. Our Piece Pricing Program offers a guaranteed fixed per-unit price that gives the client the ability to accurately forecast labor costs and determine profit at the start of each project. Here’s some common circumstances where Piece Pricing is very beneficial.

When the Contingent Workforce Grows Large Projects often require a large number of contingent workers and problems can easily develop. The size of the temporary crew is too large for effective supervision. Supervisors have many responsibilities and the added workload stretches their limits. The busy season may not last long enough to justify hiring more supervisors. Overburdened supervisors are often unsatisfied with their working conditions and productivity can slip.

Ship Dates Are Tight Projects often face tight ship dates. Deadlines for a project are often too tight to be handled effectively with existing resources. Missing ship dates causes problems further down the supply chain. These type of problems always come back in the form of higher costs. Meeting ship dates is a primary goal of a good distribution program. Down stream supply chain partners can only tolerate missed ship dates for so long.

When Peak Season Arrives The company’s business is affected by seasonality. A company’s peak season can require a significant increase in staff size. This is followed by layoffs in the off-season. Staffing up for the peak season only to staff down in the off-season can often be a costly and time-consuming process. Leads and supervisors are often stretched beyond their limits during peak seasons.

Too Little Space Causes Problems Too little warehouse space to run contingent workforce projects causes our clients problems. Space is always a concern for most operations. Floor space used on a daily basis is often sacrificed for projects. Floor space is part of the planning process for all production projects and can be a source of constraint for a new project.

You Need to Know Labor Costs in Advance In many situations a company doesn’t know the fixed cost of a production process. While the steps of the process are largely known, there are many variables that affect the process. Knowing the true labor costs of employees is important in determining the gross margin. Unfortunately many projects are done with only descriptions by words, drawings, and physical parts.

Low Productivity Is Costing You Low productivity increases costs and decreases profit. Low productivity is caused by a number of things including poor performers, high turnover, little or no training, poor process planning and little supervision. If a company has sophisticated metrics and measurement processes, low productivity can be identified.

Reconciling Time Cards Is a Problem Large contingent workforces stretch the limits of leads and supervisors in a number of ways. Reconciling time cards can take hours a day. The customer prefers invoices based on units produced as a solution to the time they waste on reconciling multiple employee timecards.
